Havanese Puppies


Key points to remember to help keep your Havanese Puppy healthy:

  • Keep up to date with all shots
  • Give Heartworm preventative, (this can be only during spring-summer months or year round) consult your vet. Heartworm disease is deadly.
  • Clean ears regularly, be sure to pluck out any hair growth (see grooming section for more info).
  • Keep up with flea and tick control. I use FrontLine Plus. It lasts up to 3 months and is waterproof. It kills fleas, flea eggs and larvae it also kills all stages of 4 major ticks, including the one that causes Lyme disease.
  • For good oral health buy a tooth brush and tooth paste made for dogs and brush teeth 3-4 times a week. (see Havanese Grooming section for more information)

Tips for keeping your Havanese Puppy safe: 
  • Alway keep your dog's ID tag attached to your Havanese Puppy's collar. 
  • Never walk your Havanese puppy/dog off the leash.
  • Consider getting a microchip or tattoo. If your Havanese Puppy/dog gets lost you will have better chance of recovery. Ask your vet.
  • Check that your backyard fence is secure before letting your dog run free. Don't leave unattended. Deter digging especially along the fence. 
  • No Bones. Especially bones that splinter.
  • Block open stairways with a puppy gate until your dog is confident climbing stairs.
  • Limit time outside in cold weather your dog could get frostbite. Rock salt causes damage to pads on feet and some products used to melt ice can be harmful, so clean off paws, be sure to check between the toes.
  • Car ride: Avoid feeding your dog for a few hours before you leave to lesson the chance of car sickness. Secure him in a doggy car seat or travel crate while traveling and never leave him alone in the car.
  • Avoid taking puppies to public places where other dogs are until they have had all their inoculations - this is usually around 16 weeks of age providing you are keeping up with your vet appointments. 


List of toxins to avoid that could make your Havanese Puppy ill or even cause death:
  • Weed killer: If licked off paws could make your Havanese puppy ill, keep puppy/dogs off the lawn if just applied.
  • Antifreeze: Store away from your Havanese puppy and be mindful of any puddles around your house or when walking. Antifreeze is deadly and it taste good to dogs
  • Toilet bowl chemicals such as fresheners that you leave in the bowl or tank are toxic to your Havanese Puppy/dog. Never allow your dog to drink from the toilet.
  • Chocolate: Highly toxic, even a small amount can kill your Havanese Puppy/dog. Pay attention to small children, they tend to hide or drop things around the house. Also when you walk or visit outside the home be vigilant.
  • Plants:  Household and backyard plants may be poisonous to your Havanese Puppy/dog, identify them and keep puppy/dog away or remove the plants.
